When we think of the phrase "lesbian design," it almost seems like an oxymoron. However, there is a very distinct breakdown of female gay fashion styles today. Historically, lesbians chose to buck the feminine trend of dresses and corsets by wearing trousers -- and often faced being ostracized as a result. In the 1930s, Marlene Dietrich appeared on screen in her famous tuxedo-inspired suit, which set a new trend of androgynous fashion. Overall, lesbian fashion seems to be borne of playing with gender roles, either by renouncing them or recreating them to make them their own. As it is with all fashion, however, what you wear must reflect your personal style, regardless of your sexual orientation.
